The Hyundai Venue marked the South Korean carmaker’s entry into the subcompact SUV space, however, beyond that Venue managed to surpass the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza to become the best-selling SUV in India. While now that title resides with the Venue’s older sibling Creta, nonetheless Hyundai’s sub-4 metre SUV continues to be one of the top-selling SUVs in India. It was the first fully connected SUV in the country, and much recently we saw the introduction of a few new variants and clutch-less manual transmission technology, which Hyundai calls – iMT (intelligent manual transmission).
The Hyundai Venue gets the quintessential SUV proportions with boxy design, smooth edges, a large grille, underbody cladding and roof rails among others. The split lighting setup, which large LED projector headlamps and sleek indicators positioned above it, adds a modern touch while the bumper cladding and faux skid plate give it a rugged look. The flared wheel arches and sculpted muscular line add character to the design, while the LED taillamps and centrally-positioned ‘Venue’ logo add to its premiumness.
The dark interior of the Hyundai Venue’s cabin adds to its stylish design, which is highlighted by the suspended touchscreen display that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the BlueLink connected car system. In addition to voice command and smartwatch connectivity, the system offers remote access, geofencing, vehicle tracking a tonne of other connectivity features. The SUV also get premium fabric upholstery with the leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel, automatic climate control, an air purifier, rear AC vents and an electric sunroof among others.
Hyundai offers the Venue with three engine options, 2 petrol and 1 diesel motor, which includes – a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 1.0-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The 1.2-litre engine is the tried and tested one and it continues to make 82 bhp and 114 Nm of peak torque and offers quite a decent performance, and it comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the star of the show here is the turbo-petrol unit. Churning out 118 bhp and 172 Nm torque, it adds the fun element to the Venue. The light clutch and smooth gearshifts from the 6-speed unit make it a breeze to drive around the city, while the powerful engine is capable enough the handle long highway runs as well. Of course, you also get the convenience for the new iMT gearbox and DCT automatic transmission. The diesel engine is the same one as on the Kia Seltos, but here it has been detuned to make 99 bhp and 240 Nm of peak torque, while mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The engine still feels toque and fun to drive.
The Hyundai Venue is loaded with safety tech, which includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, electronic stability control, and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC). Of course, you have other elements like rear parking camera, auto headlamps with cornering function, ISOFIX child seat mounts, seatbelt warning, parking sensors, and speed sensing door locks, among others.
The Hyundai Venue is priced starting at 6.75 lakh and goes up to Rs. 11.59 lakh (all ex-showroom, Delhi). What’s surprising is that before the Sonet was launched the Venue was the most affordable SUV in the segment, and even now it’s just Rs. 4000 more expensive than former, that is for the base variant. So, it undercuts almost all its rivals, namely the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza by almost Rs. 60,000, the Tata Nexon by Rs. 25,000, and the Mahindra XUV300 by Rs. 1.2 lakh.
Comes With BlueLink Connected Car Technology
Multiple engine options including a 1.0 turbo-petrol unit
No diesel automatic option
Too many variants to choose from
Cramped rear seats with limited space
The Hyundai Venue is currently one of the best options in the subcompact SUV space, and its competitive pricing makes it a no-brainer. The SUV is stylish, feature-packed and offers great performance. However, it’s closest rival Sonet does come with a few extra premium features and a more powerful diesel engine as well, but it’s still up to Rs. 1.2-lakh more expensive than the Venue.
